Calaveras High School Career Technical Education
Students acquire a broad understanding of a variety of agricultural areas, develop an awareness of the many career opportunities in agriculture, participate in occupationally relevant experiences, and work cooperatively with a group to develop and expand leadership abilities. Students study California agriculture, agricultural business, agricultural technologies, natural resources, and animal, plant, and soil sciences. In the Animal Science course, students study large, small, and specialty animals.
Students explore the necessary elements, such as diet, genetics, habitat, and behavior, to create humane, ecologically, and economically sustainable animal production systems. The pathway includes the study of animal anatomy and physiology, nutrition, reproduction, genetics, health and welfare, animal production, technology, and the management and processing of animal products and by-products.

Introduction
This course integrates biological science practices and knowledge into sustainable agricultural methods. Students learn: what sustainable agriculture is; how it fits into our environment; molecular biological principles that guide sustainable agriculture; how we make decisions to maximize sustainable agricultural practices within a functioning ecosystem.

Concentrator
Students explore the physical and chemical nature of soil as well as the relationships between soil, plants, animals, and agricultural practices. They examine the properties of soil and land and their connections to plant and animal production. Using knowledge of scientific protocols as well as course content, students will develop an Agriscience research program

Capstone
Students examine the principles of Animal Science focusing on the areas of livestock production, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, nutrition, respiration, and genetics. Frequent opportunities are also given to develop and apply hands-on learning opportunities through direct applications on the CUSD school farm.

Capstone
Combines an interdisciplinary approach to laboratory science and research with agricultural management principles. Students design systems and experiments to solve current agricultural management issues. Students connect the products they create with real-world industry activities implement to demonstrate the skills demanded by both colleges and careers.

I'm proud to be an alum of CHS and the FFA program where I served as an FFA Officer. I majored in Agricultural Biology earning my B.S. from CSU, Stanislaus, and then my Career Technical Education credential in Agriculture and Natural Resources. My field work included identifying crop pests and disease and using Integrated Pest Management techniques (IPM). I then served as Research Farm and Greenhouse Supervisor at Heinz Seed for four years. For the past eight years, I have been teaching at Calaveras High School, shaping the Agriscience Pathway comprising four courses, all of which satisfy A-G college requirements. Our CTE program at CHS caters to both college and workforce-bound students, bolstered by strong instructional and community support. CHS alumni have successfully pursued careers in agriculture and find our program prepared them well for college and work. Many of my students have achieved significant milestones, serving as FFA Officers at levels above their chapter, receiving state and national proficiency awards, and earning the American FFA Degree. We take great pride in providing quality education and career opportunities for CHS students in our pathways.

Prior to teaching at CHS, I served as a 4-H Program Representative for UCCE, and worked with the Arkansas Cattlemen's Association post-college. Over the past two years, I've had the privilege of teaching here at CHS while assisting with my family's small cow/calf operation. I am thrilled that recently 22 out of 26 students achieved their Tier 1 Floral Certification after dedicating 2-3 years to floral design. Holding a CTE Certificate in Agriculture, my academic background includes an A.S. in Agricultural Science along with a B.S. in Animal Science and Agriculture Communication. It’s an honor to be part of the faculty at Calaveras High School, situated in a rural county where our special focus on agricultural pathways reflects the local job landscape, preparing students for careers in agriculture, business, and education.
